Applications are now invited from 5th March to 7th April 2019 for artists wishing to participate in our 'Art in Shops' programme as part of the 2019 Art Walk with proposals that respond to our theme 'land mark'.

The 'Art in Shops' strand to our event offers a great opportunity for artists living further away, or without a space in Portobello to get involved in the project.

We encourage proposals from artists across all disciplines wishing to take part in this year's event by showing work in local shops, venues or indoor spaces we commonly work with. Last year we also worked with a number of High Street charity shops with artist window installations.

This year we invite artists applying to this strand, to propose new or existing work that responds imaginatively to ideas around 'land mark': working the land; marking the land; industrial traces; mark making; landmarks.

We have worked with a number of shops, cafes, local businesses and other spaces in recent years. The spaces each offer very different environments in which to display work, with a great variety in the amount of space available.

Below is a list of spaces we will be working with this year. We ask you to mention on your application form those places you would most like to show your work:

Shops most suited to wall based work:
Dream & Season, Miros Bistro (Prom), Miros Pantry (High Street), Twelve Triangles, Two Sisters, Golden Bite, Green Kilt.

Shops most suited to window displays:
COVE, Cahoots, The Wild Flower Shop, Salvation Army, Marie Curie, St Columba's Hospice, Barnados, Cancer Research

Other venues (indoor space):
Swim Centre (upstairs), St Marks Church, Portobello & Joppa Parish Church, Porty Light Box

If you have suggestions for alternative indoor local spaces please include them on your application form. Please do not approach venues until you know your work has been selected.

Please note exhibitions at The Skylark, Bellfield and outdoor public spaces are part of our invited artist programme, and therefore not part of this open call.

There is no fee to participate in the 'Art in Shops' strand of the Art Walk but sales received for exhibition based work are liable for commission, payable on any sales at 15% sold through participating shops or cafes
(5% to shop | 10% to the Art Walk).

Artworks shown are to be original work from the artist submitting the form. We welcome proposals from artist collectives, artists outside of the local area, and recent graduates. All participating artists will be listed in our event map and have a page on our website.

All selected artists will be responsible for the installing and uninstalling of their own work, liaising directly with venues after the initial introduction has been made. It is important to understand when applying to show work in shops + cafes, the flexibility needed to work with often quite small, differing places for the exhibiting of work.
