The main theme in Peter’s paintings and etchings is impermanence and change in the world around us and how everything is altered by the passage of time.
Peter Standen was born in 1936 and served a bookbinding apprenticeship before studying at Nottingham College of Art. He was awarded the Andrew Grant scholarship in 1956. He then completed his studies at Edinburgh College of Art. After 2 years of National Service in Germany, he travelled extensively in Spain, Africa,Sudan and the Middle East. He taught art at Trinity Academy and was the Scottish Arts Council's Artist in Residence with Ferranti in Dundee.
His work is represented in various collections including the City Arts Centre and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
He has been a member of the Edinburgh Printmaker's Workshop since 1972 and the Scottish Society of Artists since 1965. He is best known in Edinburgh for his etching and printmaking. He had an exhibition at the Henderson Gallery in 2011 entitled Future Cityscapes.
