‘A Delicate Balance’ -
I am a painter working with a vocabulary of images developed over a number of years, referencing things and places seen and felt. The imagery reflects my awareness of the fragility and transience of life, made visible through plants and birds, symbolic of our relationship with the natural world and the importance for me of the sea.
I was brought up by water on the west coast and the sea’s constantly shifting yet continuous presence provides me with reassurance, a sense of internally coming home. I began visiting the tiny island of Iona in my teenage years and it is a place I repeatedly return to as a source of inspiration. Here, I walk daily by the sea, to feel its space and light.
The essence of the fragile materials I often choose to work with - watercolour, egg tempera, graphite, and oil on gessoed linen, physically embody my concerns.
I am a BA Honours Degree graduate from Glasgow School of Art. In my final year of study I won a Royal Society of Arts Bursary Award, which led to three years as in-house designer with Mary Quant Ltd, London. Following this I obtained my Masters Degree at The Royal College of Art. I have worked at a number of institutions across the country as a university lecturer while maintaining my own practice. Recent exhibitions include selection for The Lynn Painter-Stainer’s Painting Prize/Exhibiton, The Mall Galleries, London. At the same venue, The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation charity event; ArTAY, Perth; Our eARTh exhibition, Kunthuis Gallery, North Yorkshire; Artemis Gallery,Cumbrian Artist of the Year,C-Art at Tullie House, Cumbria; The Royal Scottish Society of Watercolourists, Edinburgh. I have exhibited throughout the U.K; shows with The Bruton Gallery, Leeds, The Collective Gallery, Richard Demarco Foundation Edinburgh and Cambridge Contemporary Art. I have taken part in a number of London Art Fairs. My work is held in a number of private collections and a selection of my work was purchased and sited at the Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford. Small scale work is available at Aosdana Gallery, Isle of Iona.
