ART HOUSES + CAFES
OPEN: 4/5 & 11/12 SEPTEMBER
15 Marlborough Street
An exhibition of work made during the past year: drawings and watercolours made on Marlborough Street; panoramic views from inside; daily walk discoveries; Instant memory sea paintings; charcoal drawings; Craigmillar book paintings, all displayed in a unique converted church.
Peter works mainly in watercolour, observing the subject in front of him, whether sea, land, building or townscape. The events of 2020-2021 called for new ways of working: firstly, in lockdown paintings made locally on Marlborough Street, which is home; and in a series of instant memory sea paintings, seen and visualised on dog walks and later captured at the kitchen table. Expansive views of Portobello painted from inside of Peter’s home are complimented by details observed on daily walks. Developing on his Kirkcudbright, Portobello and Falkland books, and the ‘Assemble’ theme for Artwalk Porty 2021, Peter is working on paintings for a new book connecting to Craigmillar, our near neighbour, with a long history seen in its buildings. New work in charcoal explores the freedom of mark making, with large drawings made in response to the outstanding exhibition space – an award winning converted church, a chance to see it!
