Venue 12

Peter Byrne

OPEN: 4/5 & 11/12 SEPTEMBER

24 Bath Street

Peter begins his large scale paintings with the process of ‘active’ looking, not just ‘passive’ seeing. Back in his studio he sets down notions of what he has taken from the experience, developing these into working drawings before selecting one to scale up. The back garden will also be open for visitors.

However, responding to the pandemic , as well as those 'phenomenological' approaches to artmaking, Peter has introduced social issues, metaphorically, combining sea wall with lockdown in a 'Seawallockdown' series. Both seem somewhat ugly and brutal. However they are present to protect us, and his 'Seawallockdown 2021' piece indicates that within their embrace, alongside safety, creativity can also take root. Art can begin to heal.
