Katy Sawrey

The Skylark, 241-243 Portobello High Street

Katy’s atmospheric paintings are made with layers of abstract, geometric shapes. Depth is built through textured brush work, finished with subtle marks and glazes. Her work draws inspiration from the colours and lines of the dramatic Scottish coastline.

Katy loves to draw inspiration from nature painting dramatic landscapes with their moody weather conditions, drawing a lot of inspiration from the North Sea.

An abstract painter for the past twenty years Katy is exhibiting and selling her Artwork successfully through multiple online and social media platforms.

Each piece is created with multiple layers and textures, beginning with mark making and expressive strokes and moving on to more considered layers using shapes and colours as well as scratching and sanding back top layers to accomplish the atmosphere of the subject she is painting. Due to the depth and layers of her work you are able to explore the painting over time discovering new aspects to enjoy.

This collection is inspired by landscapes which are covered in the haar, a claustrophobic sea fog which creates a beautifully dramatic outlook.

My journey with Art started as a child and I love studying it all the way through school. I then went on to study Textile Design at Central Saint Martins in London, it was here that I developed a love of mark making and colour. I specialised in Print but my favorite part of the course was always the sketch books and mood boards, I loved using colour and texture and experimenting with pattern.

After I graduated from university my journey took on a slightly different direction. My husband and I decided to do some travelling and once we returned I became pregnant with our first baby. 3 more babies later and a blissful few years living in New Zealand we returned to the UK and settled in Edinburgh. It was once we settled here and my youngest child started Nursery that I finally had the time and head space to pick up my paint brushes again! I can't express how much it means to me to be able to paint again, I am loving every moment of it.
