Jenny Martin

OPEN: 7+8 & 14+15 September

7 Esplanade Terrace EH15 2ES

Jenny’s recent drawings and prints respond to unseen or overlooked parts of her daily life in Portobello and Leith; quirky shop fronts, the patterns in buildings and the landscape. This new work is displayed in her new garden studio, and links in to this year’s Artwalk theme of Landmarks.

Jenny is inspired by colour and pattern and loves finding quirky corners of places or things to draw. While she is interested in people, they rarely feature in her work; instead she likes to imply a human presence through the things people make, own or leave behind – buildings, objects, clothing – a trace of a life, rather than an explicit portrait. Her recent work explores the routes she travels frequently between Leith, Portobello and Musselburgh, looking at the overlooked and unseen places and trying to draw a portrait of the place and the people who live there. She gathers lots of drawings in her sketchbooks, and these will be on show in her garden studio, along with her work.

Jenny Martin works in print, paint and drawing and has won awards in all media. She studied Fine Art at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art before going to undertake a Postgraduate in Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. She has exhibited widely throughout the UK and has built up a reputation for her complex, multi layered screen prints and her jewel like paintings. She teaches on the Foundation Course at Leith School of art, and currently divides her time between this and making her work at Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop and in her own studio.
