Nicky Sanderson is an artist whose practice involves careful study of her chosen environment through the mediums of paint, collage and printmaking.
She strives to create substance and depth in her process, while acknowledging her love of colour and pattern found in nature and made by human hand.
Lately Nicky’s work has been inspired by trips to the Outer Hebrides where she has found a deep interest in the history of the landscape as defined by human intervention over millennia. She has created layers or slices of different eras in the development of the Isle of Lewis which take the form of 2 metre wide hangings.
Her particular passion is for the beauty that is revealed in the peat bank cuttings. The accumulation of organic matter through time can only be appreciated by the action of cutting it away.
The nature of her subject matter lends itself to making work by building layers of paint, collaged papers and mediums such as varnish, wax and pigment.
As a trained printmaker, it is a natural step for Nicky to explore her themes in print, favouring silkscreen and monotype.
A new body of work results from a recent trip to Myanmar.
