Linda found while researching in Portobello Library the following old rhyme, used by a travelling showman who staged puppet shows in Portobello, which forms the centrepiece of her installation at St Philips Church Garden.
Bring out your umbrella.
We’re going away, For a holiday.
Down to Portobello”
Linda's installation reflects not only upon Portobello as a popular holiday resort, and of the umbrella as an essential luggage item when visiting Portobello, but also on the umbrella as a form of shelter, as is often the church. The umbrellas that form part of this installation have mainly been collected from local Portobello residents.
Linda Thompson has been working in a public art field since 2005. She enjoys working with local communities to create installations and interventions that respond closely to their local environment and space they occupy.
"It is important to me that the community feels involved with the project and can identify with the concept behind the work, and then enjoy the visual experience at it's conclusion".
